The noticeable changes in
language usages of last few decades has been made not to offend women, poor
people‚ the old and various minority groups due to its sensitiveness, and
people became more aware of the power of language. Politically Correct English,
which is known as PCE, is a perfect example of the changes. Heightened
sensitivity in language is a statement of respect, indicates precision of
thought, and is a positive move toward rectifying the unequal social status
between one group and another. (Source D) However, PCE is obviously not
preferred due to negative effects it has on the society. It blocks people from clear
thinking and rather brings severe distortion among them.
The word “handicapped” or “disabled”
are rather far from the reality compared to the word “cripple”. “Cripple” might
seem offensive and too frank, but it is straightforward and precise, and even
clean to face the desperate condition. Nancy Mairs is plainspoken about her
word choice, “cripple”, to describe herself without any hesitation. (Source C)
Referring “crippled” people as “handicapped” or “disabled” is providing our
minds with a greased runway down which we may slide back into unexamined and
reactive patterns of evaluation and behavior. (Source B) Using political
correct words alter language to the point of obscuring, even destroying, its
meaning. (Source D)
The careful language used to
refer to such minority is called‚ ironically‚ ′politically correct′. From the
term itself, we can find out its sarcastic side. Trying to name vulgar,
offensive or disparaging words in roundabout way, the purpose of PCE is
distorted. The politically correct terms can turn into useful expedients to be
sarcastic and make fun of the minorities. Failing students become “high-potential”
and poor people “economically disadvantaged” under PCE. (Source A) Either
intentionally or unintentionally, the minority groups may be insulted or angered
through using of politically correct words, which resulted in an instrument of
speaking teasingly.
PCE stops an important human
right to be exercised, which is freedom of speech. Since PCE results in
distortion and misrepresentation of the right, internal meaning of certain
words, people lose the chance to express their emotions directly. According to
a survey conducted by The First Amendment Center, over 56 percent of American
citizens agreed having offensive speech in lyrics, while only 24 percent of
them strongly disagreed. They showed positive attitudes on accepting speech
offensive to religious groups, one of the most sensitive and controversial
groups, with 48 percent of agree while 35 percent for strongly disagree.
