A
book named "Whale Done!" written by Kenneth Blanchard has brought a
sensation among the society filled with discrimination and prejudiced views on
each other. This book shows how encouragement and positive stimulation brings
enhancement of the latent talents of individuals. A statement of Goethe, “Treat
people as if they were what they ought to be and you help them to become what
they are capable of being”, shares the same logical coherence. This adage
conveys the idea of how positive reinforcement and redirection lead to
achievement of mental and physical development among human interactions in each
kind of society.
I
was raised in a very unrestricted and easy family. Everything was allowed to do
as far as it does not harm others or go against the essential morality. From disassembling
clocks to raising crops myself, I experienced various activities and there I
could find out what I was good at and further develop them. I was somewhat
faster than the peers in finding talents and interests. The most significant
factor to make myself involved in a wide range of things and enjoy each one of
them was the unconditional support and encouragement from my parents. At home,
the statement of Goethe can be applied realistically, since the family members
play vital roles in inducing increase in productivity and potential power.
Building encouraging relationships within families help people to be capable of
achieving their goals.
Teachers
are the ones whom the students spend more time interacting with then they do
with their parents. Having professions of helping people improve through daily
instructions and lessons, teachers induce students open and expand their
thoughts by conveying ideas and skills needed when they grom older. Whether by
encouraging or criticizing students, teachers tell students that they can push
harder and become better, which directly motivate the students to accomplish
mental and physical growth. Through the application and practice of Goethe’s
statement, any kind of schooling and education can reach the ideal and
desirable goal of enrichment in potential and ability of people.
Generally,
positive expectations and views on other people are crucial. Looking on the
bright sides of other members of the society and continuous compliments can act
as the catalyst to raise the productivity to the maximum. Pygmalion effect is
one phenomenon that acts in real life situations according to Goethe’s
statement. Pygmalion effect refers to a form of self-fulfilling prophecy that
shows better performance of people, often children or students or employees
when the greater the expectation is placed upon them. People with positive
label internalize themselves to act better and become better. According to an
experiment conducted by Rosenthal, a professor in Harvard University, the
expectation and compliant effort are reflected to the outcome. He randomly
distributed rats with same genes to three groups of students explaining that
those rats are divided according to the intelligence of them. He let the
students train those rats to go through a labyrinth for six weeks. The result
showed that rats with “higher intelligence” actually worked faster. Though all
rats had the same intelligence, the outcome differed according to the
expectations of the students who trained them. Applied to human society in the
same way, higher anticipation leads to the higher possibility of achieving one’s
goal.
Encouragement
might be abashing and require some bravery. However, watching people changing
positively through encouragement, expectation, and continuous attention makes
others satisfied. This cycle of encouragement have a strong power to make the
overall atmosphere of the society full of brightness and happiness.
